America prides itself on being the land of the free, home of the brave, and the place where everyone comes to make a better life for themselves. And while that may be what the founding fathers envisioned, life in these United States is not always free of injustice or hardship.

According to a Household Food Security in the United States in 2019 report, 35 million Americans live in households that struggle with a basic lack of food. One in eight households with children cannot buy enough food, with households in the south suffering the most.

Raising Awareness of Nationwide Hunger

To tackle the rising problem of hunger in this country, the United States Congress recently designated June 10th as National Hunger Awareness Day. Here are some things you can do on this day to take part and help spread awareness:

Come Together

Reach out to your network of family, friends, and work acquaintances to see what activities you might plan for your local community. You may want to organize a food drive, raise money for a local shelter, or volunteer at a soup kitchen.

Get Schools Involved

For some local communities, school is still in session in the early part of June. If your local schools are in session, get the kids involved. They may want to volunteer at a local soup kitchen or hand out fact sheets in public spaces. They can also build displays for their school so all students can learn more.

Write About It

Now that you know some of the shocking statistics about hunger in this country, it’s time to share them with as many people as you can. Consider writing about these stats and the June 6th awareness day on your social media pages, your blog, and even in your local paper. No, you don’t need to be a professional writer to get published in the local paper, op-ed articles are always welcome.

Find a Food Bank or Pantry Near You

If you or someone you know is struggling to put food on the table, you can use a simple search to find a local food bank or pantry near you. Simply visit the Feeding America website for more information.
